7 tips to keep your workspace clean

University of Arizona 'germ guru', Dr. Charles Gerba, has stated that your work desk harbours 400 times more germs than a toilet seat. So, when you rest your hand on your desk, there may be 10 million bacteria keeping you company.

The study also found that as well as desks, phones, microwave door handles, water fountain handles and keyboards are in the top ten most germ-contaminated spots in the office.

With that lovely image in mind, we spoke with Complete Care Group to get some top tips to keep your work environment clean.

1. Clean your desk regularlyThis may seem very obvious but it's something that should be done more regularly. Dust down your desk and use an antibacterial spray to wipe it down. Also, ensure that under your desk is hoovered or mopped often.

2. Give some TLC to your keyboard and mouseShut down your computer and unplug your keyboard (if it is wired). Carefully turn your keyboard upside down and gently shake it over a bin to get rid of any debris. Next, use antibacterial wipes or cotton buds/pads with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to clean the keys.

If you have a mouse this will also need to be cleaned regularly. To begin, disconnect your mouse. Take the mouse ball cover out and clean with a dry lint-free cloth. It's best to use specialist cleaning fluid to clean the rollers, before replacing the mouse ball and cover. For an optical mouse, clean with a lightly dampened cotton ball. Pat dry and reconnect.

3. Clean your screenWith everything switched off and shut down, move your laptop or monitor and wipe the surface it stands on. Use a microfibre cleaning cloth and a little water to make the cloth damp. Do not spray water directly onto the laptop screen or monitor, but apply a small amount of water on the corner of the microfiber cloth.

4. De-grime your office telephone We all know phones are a hotspot for bacteria and need regular cleaning. Wipe your phone - including the unit and wires - with anti-bacterial wipes. The ear, mouth piece and the keypad require extra attention as they have the most concentration of bacteria.

5. Reduce clutterBeing busy at work means that clutter can build up on your desk quite quickly. Unfortunately, this means dust can gather easily too, which makes regular cleaning more difficult. Try to keep your desk as clutter-free as possible.

6. Eat food away from your desk Eating at a quiet kitchen table may seem like a faraway dream to some. 'Who has the time?' you might say. But for many reasons, you should take a break from your work to eat. Apart from being good for your health, it will also minimise mess. Food crumbs and drink marks can easily build up without you noticing.

7. Clean it before you leave itTreat your desk like an extension of your home. How would you feel if someone saw your desk at the end of the day? If you have time give your desk a quick clean before you leave. There is nothing better than starting a new day at a clean desk.
